What is RSS?
RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication and it's a solution to the problem of being overwhelmed by the amount of changing information on the web. Checking websites that you are interested in to see if anything new has been added can be very time-consuming. With an RSS feed the information comes directly to your computer.
You simply choose which RSS news feeds you want to subscribe to, and then every time any new information is added, it appears on your computer as a headline and short summary. If that catches your attention, then you can follow the link to visit the website for the whole story.
How do I get RSS news feeds?
You will need an RSS news reader or news aggregator. When you subscribe to an RSS feed the latest news and information is sent to your RSS news reader program. Your RSS news reader alerts you of new content, and when you want to you can view the headlines and summaries and choose whether you want to go to the website for more information.
What is a news reader?
A news reader is any program or website capable of reading RSS feeds. There are lots of different sites which review and recommend various readers. If you search for "feed finder" or "RSS reader" in your search engine, you will find some of the more popular ones.
Some browsers (Safari 2.0, Firefox, and Opera) automatically detect and display RSS and need no external news reader.
